Word Unscrambler
Unscramble jumbled letters into real words, listed from the longest to the shortest. Add ? for a blank tile. Free, runs in your browser.
How it works
Type the scrambled letters and the unscrambler lists the real words you can spell with them, grouped by length from the longest to the shortest. A word is listed when every one of its letters is matched by one of your letters, each letter used once; a question mark is a blank tile that can stand for any one letter. The words come from the ENABLE word list of 172,823 English words. Spaces, digits and punctuation in your input are ignored, only the first 15 letters are used, and inside each length the words are in alphabetical order. Raise the shortest word setting to leave out two- and three-letter words and see only the longer ones. The first group shows the words that use all your letters, which is the full unscrambled answer to a jumble.
Example: tea gives nine words: ate, eat, eta, tae and tea with three letters, then ae, at, et and ta with two. A longer jumble such as parental starts with the four eight-letter words: parental, parlante, paternal and prenatal.
Frequently asked questions
How do I unscramble letters?
Type the letters in the box. The words that can be made from them appear below, grouped by length with the longest first. The first group uses every letter.
What does the question mark do?
It is a blank tile and can stand for any one letter. Each question mark you add makes the list longer, because the unscrambler tries every letter in its place.
Does it find words that use only some of my letters?
Yes. Every word that can be built from your letters is listed, not only the ones that use all of them. Use the shortest word setting to hide the short ones.
What is the longest jumble I can enter?
Fifteen letters, blanks included. Extra letters are ignored.
Why does it show words I do not know?
The ENABLE list is large and holds many rare but valid English words. If you only want everyday words, raise the shortest word length and scan the first groups.
Which words are missing?
Proper names, abbreviations and most slang. Games and tournaments use their own lists, so check a word in the dictionary your game uses.
How is this different from the anagram solver?
The anagram solver puts the words that use all your letters first and then lists shorter words. The unscrambler lists everything in one set of length groups, which suits a quick check of a jumble.
Is what I type sent to a server?
No. The letters are checked in your browser and nothing you type is sent anywhere.
